Stage 11

Today, marks the first day of our new adventure. Stepping off the cliff again. We are leaving for Brazil on November 6th. Cycling on the Caminho de Santiago. From Lisbon to Santiago De Compostela. Overnight in Madrid. 12 days back home in Ireland. Then on to Brazil. I estimate it will take two years before I can breath again.

Why today. a) Silvia has given up the rat race. She has stopped working. b) All of my students now know that we are leaving Japan. c) I can feel now there is now going back.

KAMIKOCHI camping 2012

Camping trip to KAMIKOCHI.

Autumn 2012

We took a short trip up to Kamikochi over the weekend. José. Misaki. Silvia and I. Basically we took the overnight bus Friday night. Arrived early Saturday. Set up tents. Hiked up to the Tokusawa area. Rushed back to meet up with friends for lunch. BBQ dinner. Prepared for cold night. Sunday morning walked south to teishiko. Bus back to Nagoya.

Friday night we took the 22:30 Meitesu bus .company Night bus. Regular price is ¥12,000 return, but we managed some sort of group (4) discount. ¥11,000 return. Bus stop number 1. On. The 4th floor of meitetsu bus center. Check in. About 15 minutes before departure. This bus can store large backpacks. Of course we left exactly on time. The bus was pretty full but there were maybe four of five vacant seats. NO TOILET on board and we didn’t use the highway. Route 19 northeast out of the city. Peering out into the darkness I thought to myself I can cycle faster than this. The driver doesn’t want to arrive to early. And was stretching a four hour drive out into a six and a half hour trip. Bus stops every two hours for a toilet break and seeing that this is Japan a cigarette break.

Had to change bus. So called Eco bus. Very little space below so most people have to sit with their backpacks on their laps.

Arrived just as it was getting light. I brought the gang up along the river to show where I wanted to camp. Then to the check in.

Check in. Was very smooth even at 05;30. The staff were very friendly 700 yen per person. No charge for the tent and she explianed where we could not camp. Basically the river floodplain was out of bounds but the rest was camp anywhere you like. We just filled in a simple form. Name and address simple.

Ideas for next time: assemble just one tent. Stow all the gear in the one tent. Go on the hike and assemble the other tents later. This campsite was not crowded at all even for peak autumn leaves weekend.

It was 4 c when we arrived.

Spent two hours setting up. Headed out along the path after 8 am. Bright sunshine. Perfect weather. Heading along a forest trail north towards Tokusawa.
We were delighted to pass some monkeys on the way. Japanese macaque. Just two adults I guess the rest of the band were nearby but we didn’t see them.
Tokusawa area. I had hiked to this spot 20 years previous really picturesque campsite. Jose, Misaki and Silvia agreed that we should try and camp here on our next visit which will probably be next Spring.
Had an apple. Bear bells.

Returned mostly along the opposite bank. View of more classically red leaves. More maple trees. Our travel companions. Were great. Messy lunch
